Over most of the last two decades, CPU performance gains between generations were incremental, and a three-year-old Xeon still did the job with only a slight efficiency penalty.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depreciation schedules followed suit. The 5-7 year window is no longer the correct timeframe for your hardware.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Actually Changed: AI Compressed the Timeline To 18-36 Months<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nvidia&#8217;s release cadence didn&#8217;t slow down to match anyone&#8217;s budget cycle. H100 shipped in 2023, H200 followed within about a year, and Blackwell architecture landed after that. Each generation made the prior one economically deficient.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An H100 can still train models, but it costs more to get the same work done than newer chips do. Uptime Institute&#8217;s 2026 Global Data Center Survey found the average modal rack density crossed 11 kW for the first time this year, up from 9 kW in 2025. Some operators are already pursuing refresh timelines under four years, specifically because <a href=\"https:\/\/exittechnologies.com\/de\/blog\/datenzentrum\/data-center-retrofit-why-modernizing-beats-new-construction-right-now\/\">legacy racks can&#8217;t be retrofitted<\/a> to the power and cooling profile newer GPU systems need.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gartner&#8217;s numbers back this up at the macro level. The firm&#8217;s July 2026 worldwide IT spending forecast, its most recent, puts 2026 spending at $6.37 trillion, up 14.2% year over year. Data center systems spending is growing faster than any other IT category, up 62.5%, as hyperscalers keep building AI capacity.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why This Matters Right Now, In Q3<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 5-7 year horizon misjudges when hardware needs replacing and underfunds the disposal, resale, and replacement line items. Those costs need to be re-modeled at the right frequency.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before your budget locks, pull the actual install dates on <a href=\"https:\/\/exittechnologies.com\/de\/verkaufen\/grafikkarte\/\">your GPU fleet<\/a> and measure them against an 18-36 month curve (if you don\u2019t have that in place already). The cost-per-workload gap between your two generation-old fleet and the current generation widens every quarter it stays in the rack.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resale value follows a related curve. CoreWeave&#8217;s CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/14\/ai-gpu-depreciation-coreweave-nvidia-michael-burry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> CNBC in 2025 that H100 capacity coming off contract was getting rebooked almost immediately, at roughly 95% of its original price. Demand for well-utilized older chips stayed strong even after H200 and Blackwell shipped.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This doesn&#8217;t mean you need to refresh every compute asset on an 18-month clock. Even the hyperscalers recalibrate constantly.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amazon extended its server useful-life assumption from five to six years in 2024, citing efficiency gains. Then it reversed course a year later and cut it back to five, citing the accelerated pace of AI-driven hardware development. Refresh timing has to track actual workload economics rather than a fixed rule in either direction.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building GPU Refresh Cadence Into Your Budget<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start with an audit. Map your current GPU fleet&#8217;s install dates against actual AI workload depreciation curves. Build resale and disposition timing into the capital plan itself, as a line item with a date attached.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loop in finance and procurement teams now. This is a cross-functional planning problem, so the earlier the CFO&#8217;s office understands the real cadence, the less friction you&#8217;ll hit when the resale and replacement dollars need to move.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What To Do With Retired GPU Infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired doesn&#8217;t mean worthless. A GPU pulled out of production early in its depreciation curve, while it&#8217;s only one or two generations behind, retains strong resale value.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recovering it does something concrete for the budget problem that comes with a compressed refresh cycle.
